Barroz 3D Movie Review
Mohanlal is one actor, who also became one of the great revered actors in Malayalam Cinema, but now as he directs under the camera for the very first time with Barroz 3D, an installation that stands as a fantasy-adventure of promise-not less of a space for visual grandeur. The trailer bears a lot of expectation, clearly establishing the film’s ambition at producing a gripping 3D experience-the whole ‘n viewing hardly works great magic over otherwise. But, even if the movie impresses with its imagery, the tale fails to cast a bit of spell and leaves the viewers with a want.
Plot Summary:
In 1663, there is Barroz (Mohanlal); a star guardian who looks after the treasure of the Da Gama family. He was given the responsibility from the King of Da Gama (Ignacio Mateos) but because of that, he was condemned to be a ghost for ages guarding the treasure.

This tale narrates how he turned into a ghost, the forces that try to steal the diamond and how he pursues redemption. One very good emotional arc is delivered via Isabella, a young girl who gets entangled in the fate of Barroz.
Highlights:
- What a visual extravaganza: The film’s best aspect is pure technical brilliance; the 3D effects bring Barroz’s world to life, adding immersion to its audience. Santosh Sivan’s cinematography captures grandeur and mysticism of the 17th century, while the set designs make up a dreamscape worthy of fantasy.
- Dual Role for Mohanlal: The passion of Mohanlal is translated as an actor and as a director. Statically fascinating, Mohanlal’s Barroz is paradoxical with a virtue of timelessness. Mohanlal stupendously excels in visual storytelling, while unfortunately, the narrative is weak to match the grandeur of his vision.
- Supporting Cast: Shayla McCaffrey, makes an emotional depth of the story as Isabella. Ensemble cast including Ignacio Mateos could deliver good performances. Barroz and Isabella’s emotional moments are some of the best moments in the film.
- Music and Background Score: The score by Lydian Nadhaswaram aptly suits the film’s essence, even adding to the tension and emotion regarding the film.
Shortcomings:
- Weak Storyline: Despite this premise, the film fails miserably in execution. The plot begins promisingly with an adventurous theme, but soon proves predictable-the complexity required to keep the audience’s interest is missing. Some scenes just drone on and on-and affect pacing.
- Lack of Emotional Depth: Although the film has a couple of moving moments, it doesn’t quite strike a sentimental chord with the audience. Probings into Barroz’s motivations, or the treasure, could thus be developed further for more dimension to the character or story.
- Missed Opportunities: The film misses an opportunity to integrate more exciting fantasy elements or twists that could have elevated the story. Comparisons to other fantasy films like Anaganaga O Dheerudu show how Barroz 3D falls short in delivering a truly captivating experience.
- Uneven VFX Quality: While some visual effects are impressive, others feel underwhelming. The inconsistency in VFX quality detracts from the film’s otherwise visually stunning presentation.
Technical Aspects:
- Cinematography: Santosh Sivan’s lensing work is top-class as that adds grandeur to the visual appeal of the film.
- Editing: B Ajith Kumar’s editing could have been crisper for a suturing abbreviated length and elimination of unnecessary parts.
- Production Design: Kudos to the production team for the painstaking recreation of all meticulous details going into the condition of the 17th century.
- 3D Effects: The highlight of the film is its 3D visuals-an experience one would adore as far as great visual spectacles are concerned.
Verdict:
Barroz 3D has both positive and negative aspects. In fact, its technical achievements and brilliant 3D effects form its highlights but fail to come up with an engaging and emotionally moving story. Probably it might entertain the children and die-hard fans of Mohanlal; for others, it is really a one-time watch, at best. Certainly, a stronger script and tighter narration would have led to a far more impressive directorial debut.
