Lazarus Review : Harlan Coben has been an expert in putting together the small screen versions of suspense. Having had literally endless variations of the story such as the Netflix movie Missing You and the Polish miniseries The Woods, it is evident that Coben knows how to keep people at the edge of their seat. His new original series, Lazarus, is now based on Prime Video, but it brings a new spin to his trademark style.
Lazarus Review And Storyline
Lazarus is the film that follows Joel Laz Lazarus (Sam Claflin), who comes back to his residence following the deaths of his father who has committed suicide. He starts to have weird and inexplicable things happening soon. Laz is sucked into a web of unsolved murders with the assistance of his sister Jenna (Alexandra) and his best friend, Seth (David Fynn), the mysterious patients of his father are connected to the unsolved murder of his sister 25 years before.
The peculiarity of this series is that Laz sees surreal visions of the patients of his father who are already dead in many ways. As he further explores the records of his father, he discovers things that may fall apart the fabric of his life and people that he loves.
Cinematic Style and Performances
The performance combines psychological thriller and supernatural aspects. The hallucinations of Laz, which is a mixture of memories and haunting conversations, are somewhat disjointed and almost dreamlike. The cinematography is blurred and this reflects his state of mind, as viewers get absorbed in his disoriented mind.
Sam Claflin is a strong actor, as he is able to demonstrate the role of Laz, who tries to distinguish between the reality and hallucination. Some of the most tense moments in the series are the time he sees ghostly figures of his father and communicates with them.
Themes and Twists
Fundamentally, Lazarus is a book that dwells upon family secrets, inherited sins and the spectral aspect of unresolved trauma. Any vision and discovery brings more layers to the mystery, gradually showing possible suspects and motives. But there are narrative twists that are imposed and sometimes they weaken the initial super natural mystery of the series.
