The Masti franchise that was launched in 2004 and was initially known because of its taboo type of humour with an adult dimension is making a comeback after almost ten years with Mastiii 4. The new movie tries to revive the naughty, rogue entertainment format which previously appealed to the youth. Even with the presence of the actual three Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani, it cannot revive a franchise that now seems to be too tired.
Instead of adapting to changing expectations of the audience, Mastiii 4 is stuck in a formula, which no longer works. What might have been an imaginative re-creation becomes a strained and desperate effort to do adult comedy.
Plot Overview: A Lack of Innovation
The plot is based in the United Kingdom, as three friends who are married; Amar (Riteish Deshmukh), Meet (Vivek Oberoi) and Prem (Aftab Shivdasani) are lifelessly going through marriage. Both characters are depicted choking in the face of bizarre actions of his wife:
- Amar’s wife (Elnaaz Norouzi) is excessively charitable, prioritising society over her husband.
- Meet’s wife (Shreya Sharma) is highly suspicious and tracks every movement of her husband through technology.
- Prem’s wife (Ruhi Singh) embraces every religious philosophy, creating an over-the-top version of multicultural domestic life.
The three are fed up with their routine, so they resort to a bizarre idea of so-called a Love Visa that would grant them a one-week life of freedom without their spouses. The twist however, comes when their wives also accept the same offer and abandon them. This turnabout would have been a chance to give serious comedy and parody but instead it becomes a pretext to a series of hack-a-hack slapstick and pathetic innuendos.
Comedy Analysis: Loud, Lazy and Lacking Wit
An effective adult comedy must have humor, cleverness and cleverness in the situations. Mastiii 4 confuses vulgarity and volume with humour. The movie keeps relying on cliche lines of two meanings, far-fetched body humour and fed punchlines that are neither natural nor smart.
The comedy is not caused by character-related scenarios or witty dialogue but the pathetic effort to attract the laughter with the shock value. Thus, the movie is devoid of the juvenile irreverence that had made the previous Masti movies amusing and it looks crass on purpose.
Performances: Capable Actors Let Down by Weak Writing
Despite the poor script, the core cast attempts to extract humour where possible:
- Riteish Deshmukh retains his natural comic timing, but the material does not support him.
- Vivek Oberoi occasionally brings glimpses of his earlier charm, but the writing restricts him to exaggerated reactions.
- Aftab Shivdasani remains understated, but his calm performance is overshadowed by the film’s frantic tone.
The supporting cast, particularly Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor, is underutilised. Known for strong comic skills, they are reduced to loud caricatures, relying on shouting rather than nuanced delivery.
Music: A Weak Attempt at Comedy Relief
The music was one of the previous strengths of the franchise and was used to give comic relief and popularity even outside the movies. Mastiii 4 does not even provide that in its soundtrack. The songs are not catchy and the lyrics are childish instead of comic. The music is not able to improve the mood, only the general lack of creativity of the film is mirrored.
Writing and Direction: A Formula That No Longer Works
Diwah Milap Zaveri seems to be holding on to the previous identity of the franchise, yet does not make it fit the modern sensibilities. The movie relies on sexual innuendo and loud acting, instead of adding the humour of adults, which is created through satire, clever improvisation or emotional conflicts which anyone can identify with. This is not only outdated but also the effort is lacking.
No meaningful development takes place in the script, characters and situation, as such actors are left to act without a proper background. The outcome is a series of stretched jokes with no unity of narration.
Climax: A Predictable and Ineffective Finish
The final act seeks to establish a reflection and a closure situation akin to the original movie of the series. Nevertheless, the last part is not emotionally compensated and comical because of insufficient build-up. It does not leave the audience with a surprise or a laugh, but only with tiredness.
Final Verdict
Mastiii 4 illustrates how the use of nostalgia is not sufficient to support any movie except one that is well written. The cast is as constant and comfortable as ever but is confined by a script that just does not capitalise on them.
Should you watch it?
The film is not recommended for theatrical viewing. Those curious about the franchise may wait for its digital release, but even there, expectations must remain limited.
Final Rating: 1.5/5
