Sonam Wangchuk and 3 Idiots Connection: The long-standing controversy surrounding the inspiration behind the much-celebrated character Rancho from the hit Bollywood movie 3 Idiots has been making news once again. For many years, it has been believed that Aamir Khan’s character Phunsukh Wangdu, aka Rancho, was an inspiration drawn from the celebrated education innovator Sonam Wangchuk.
But now, the lead actor of 3 Idiots has cleared the air on the misconception. In a recent interview session held during the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir stated that he himself and the other writers of the movie were unaware of the existence of Sonam Wangchuk while working on 3 Idiots.
Aamir Khan Calls Rancho-Sonam Wangchuk Connection a Misconception
Responding to the controversy, Aamir Khan declared that the link between the characters of Rancho and Sonam Wangchuk is nothing but a misunderstanding. The actor added that the makers of 3 Idiots did not know anything about Wangchuk while writing the movie.
Aamir also made it clear that Sonam Wangchuk’s contribution to education and innovation does not need any connection with a fictional movie character to be respected.
He praised Wangchuk’s efforts and expressed concern over his health amid his ongoing hunger strike, urging people to focus on his real-life work rather than linking him only with the film.
Why Did the Sonam Wangchuk and Rancho Debate Start?
The matter became a hot topic again when actor Omi Vaidya, who portrayed the famous character Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots, extended his support to Sonam Wangchuk in the latter’s protest.
Speaking about Wangchuk’s campaign, Omi mentioned the popular character Phunsukh Wangdu, which made a lot of fans believe that Rancho was based on the life of Wangchuk.
The statement quickly went viral on social media, creating a renewed debate among fans of the 2009 blockbuster.
Rajkumar Hirani Had a Different Story About Rancho’s Inspiration
Director of 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani, has already presented a different version of the source of inspiration for the character of Rancho.
As Hirani claims, Rancho was born out of numerous experiences he had in his life, as well as while being at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
According to the director, the character of Rancho is about a man who listens to knowledge and passion, not to diplomas and scores.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra Also Shared His Perspective
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has also revealed information about the character Rancho in the past. He said that there were some traits of Rancho which were inspired by his own life, particularly the hardships he had faced when he began making films.
Another interesting point to note was that according to Chopra, the name ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ was associated with an FTII student.
3 Idiots Continues To Inspire Audiences Even After Years
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots is one of the most loved movies from India. It was an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s book Five Point Someone, focusing on problems with education, creativity, and doing something you love.
Even after more than a decade, characters like Rancho, Farhan, and Raju continue to connect with audiences.
While the debate about Rancho’s real-life inspiration may continue, Aamir Khan’s statement has clarified that Sonam Wangchuk was not the direct inspiration behind the character.
Both Rancho and Sonam Wangchuk represent the importance of innovation and learning, but their journeys remain separate.
