Thangalaan Movie Review: The film is set in an 18th century town and tells a dramatic story concerning human greed, societal oppression and endless drive for self-assertion. It is about Thangalaan (Vikram), a tough tribesman who together with Clement, a British explorer goes to search for gold in Kolar region after a dishonest landlord took land belonging to tribal people. The film questions if Thangalaan’s journey will redeem his people’s dignity or not.

In the midst of the 18th century backdrop, Thangalaan is a gripping story of human greed, societal oppression and the endless pursuit of self-assertion. With help from Clement, an Englishman, who explores Kolar region where gold is said to be protected by some mythical spirit warrior, Thangalaan (Vikram), who belongs to a powerful tribe on earth looks for gold after a fake landlord invaded people’s lands. Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan is a cinematic spectacle that delves deep into themes of oppression and the struggle for justice. The film transports audiences through a psychedelic journey from the 18th century to as far back as 5 BCE. Vikram delivers a powerhouse performance as Thangalaan, capturing the character’s fury and fear with remarkable intensity.

A simple 18th-century life is depicted in the beginning of the movie Thangalaan which portrays his community as oppressed by a scheming landlord. When Thangalaan finds himself caught between the cunning landlord’s tricks, he sees an opportunity for escape when Clement calls upon the tribe to mine gold from an area believed to be haunted. From thereon the mission for Thangalaan is to get back his land and give strength back to his people.

The film-like story as told by Ranjith is such a deeply moving affair with heart-rending images. However, it is GV Prakash Kumar’s sonic composition that emphasizes technique much more than it does viewing pleasure. In some cases, the dialogues were unclear and could benefit from subtitles.

It has a lot of world-class set pieces including a flashback about Thangalaan’s forefather and a dangerous river crossing followed by a chaotic guerrilla attack. The visual effects are great but some CGI aspects leave much to be desired. It is this thing called time and space that steals away from everything else including all the visuals.

The elements of horror, both mythical and social, are blended in Thangalaan with moments of affection that emphasize Thangalaan’s relationship with his wife Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and that of Aarathi (Malavika Mohanan), who is a fierce protector of the land. It makes the narrative more profound thus not just an adventure tale.

Though some characters like the Brahmin interpreter become stereotypical figures, Ranjith’s investigation of social themes adds depth to the film. The director skilfully shows how marginalised people experience its effects such as Genguvan (Pasupathy) whose actions symbolically promote his society.

This movie criticizes the British conquered as well as their native associates, showing how money-hungry individuals turn into persecutors even those who were once altruistic like Clement. The final scene’s magic realism allows the audience to contemplate what differentiates reality from mere illusions hence giving it a distinct style.

In general, Thangalaan is a movie meant for people who enjoy artistic films, and presents a feast for the eyes along with deep indications of society. Despite its imperfections, the flick has remained lodged in memory because of Vikram’s remarkable acting.

The audience members were altogether astounded by Malavika Mohanan and her powerful representation of Aarathi, the fierce defender of the soil. Once famous for her glitzy parts, she slips into a new image effortlessly portraying a female warrior at odds with Thangalaan.

The actress’s performance is especially effective during face to face moments with Vikram as she sways between steadiness and depth in her role.

Parvathy Thiruvothu as Gangamma

Playing your part with elegance and strength is how Parvathy Thiruvothu handles Gangamma albeit her role as Thangalaan’s wife. There are only few people, who can play such devoted women in films. It needed great strength for her to be able to contribute warmth and depth that we can notice even from a distance. Although there are several limitations on the script, Parvathy managed to make the character more alive through her outstanding performances.

Pasupathy as Genguvan

As Thangalaan’s community member, he plays the role of Genguvan and his performance is detailed and strong. The character’s internal conflict and dreams come out through him very well. In that way, Pasupathy’s contribution to the movie underscores its focus on societal issues.

Supporting Cast

The supporting cast, which includes performers who act out the role of British explorer Clement and the local zamindar, contribute to the authenticity and depth of the film. In turn, each performance aids in the narrative’s portrayal of oppression, greediness and pursuit of justice.
