A Lion Cub’s Battle for Glory 🦁🔥

Vicky Kaushal plays the character of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in historical epic Chhaava, where he brings to life the storey of the Maratha warrior. Based on Shivaji Sawant Orange of the same Marathi novel, the film is a mix of history & high-end drama where they show power grabbing legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s.

A Grand Attempt That Falls Short 🎭

The title Chhaava or lion cub, defines very well the frame for a visually striking but also a not perfectly crafted historical epic. Ajay Devgn narration flashes by a wonky bout of hackneyed history lesson, as characters are disappointingly relegated as somebody rather than given room for organic evolution.

Though the universe of Chhaava is constructed exotically—Saurabh Goswami’s stunning cinematography and ominous production design are the chief reasons for this- the execution falters. Director-cinematographer Laxman Utekar’s knowledge of frame and composition is visible, but it doesn’t hold for the storey on the whole.

A Film That Talks at You, Not to You 🎬❌

The reason that instead of allowing things that come to pass naturally, Chhaava deluges audience with exposition dialogue. Wars take place off-screen, as it is only for character to talk about the aftermath. They are graphed without charge, simply as a way to advance the storey.

The script’s largest weakness is in its more subdued moments, which are usually awkward and out of place. But, Chhaava has its plus points especially in its performances.

Powerhouse Performances Save the Day 🎭🔥

The movie stands out for performances by Divya Dutta and Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb. Khanna’s presence takes the weakest dialogue up, showing his expertise in villainous characters.

Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji Maharaj performs an unforgettable performance. His body, his faces, his conviction earn one of the most solid assets of the film. Rashmika Mandanna does well as Maharani Yesubai with her chemistry on set with Kaushal lending emotional heft that the script otherwise is lightweight on.

Storyline: A Warrior’s Journey 🏹🔥

The movie tracks Sambhaji Maharaj’s fight against the increasing power of Aurangzeb, fighting for Purna Swaraj (complete picture). The movie begins with the dialogues of Ajay Devgn, establishing the historical background of India in 17th century. Marathas declares war after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj death with Sambhaji Maharaj taking over command of all Marathas.

The most striking moment is the ferocious lion fight scene, depicting Sambhaji’s braveness. Ashutosh Rana conveys his paternal uncle’s emotions. However, Divya Dutta’s Soyarabai—”Sambhaji’s stepmother, looks like an underutilised part.

Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb: A Missed Opportunity? 🎭🔪

Akshaye Khanna gives a fine performance as Aurangzeb. His low-key menace builds into bloodthirsty mania but the character development is hurried after the interval, killing the effectiveness of his evil.

What Works, What Doesn’t ✅❌

What Works:

✔ Vicky Kaushal’s remarkable performance – he is THE storey of Sambhaji Maharaj’s bravery.

✔ Excellent cinematography – visually, Chhaava is beautiful.

✔ Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai – though she has limited footage, her making an impact.

✔ Akshaye Khanna does a menacing Aurangzeb though limited, he makes an impact.

✔ War – sequences – big and visually stunnning.

What Doesn’t:

❌ Too much expositor – the movie tells to be shown. ❌ Underwritten support – Divya Dutta and Akshaye Khanna wasted. ❌ Excessive runtime (161 minutes) – the film feels stretched and loud. ❌ Excessive violence – images of Sambhaji’s horrific brutal torture-execution might be upsetting for the viewers.

Final Verdict: A Visually Stunning but Emotionally Lacking Epic 🎥⚔

Although, actor’s performances shine and visuals are captivating, over-exportunity, weak outline of characters and low emotional content, weakens Chhaava. While Vicky Kaushal thunderous as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the film’s hamfisted realisation stop it from being a great movie.
