Elle Fanning “;The X-Men are officially scratching their way back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with that a tornado of casting rumors are being spread. Fans are eager to know who will wear the iconic boots of Jean Grey amidst X-Men reviving the mutant fever followed by a Secret Wars.
In the wake of names such as Sadie Sink (and Daisy Edgar-Jones), Fanning has now been touted as a favorite to join in the role of the titular telekinetic mutant, Jean Grey. As Sink may be occupied with Spider-Man 4, Fanning may just take over one of the most powerful entry in Marvel.
Why Elle Fanning?
A Golden Globe nominated actress, with her standout performance in The Great, All The Bright Places, and most recently A Complete Unknown gig, the actress knows how to bring her characters to life, emotionally facing them like no other and having the screen presence required to nail Jean Grey.
Fans are already thrilling about the possibility of Marvel making some big announcements, potentially including letting it be known that she has been cast as the superhero.
What We Know About the Reboot So Far
- There is also speculation that Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts) will take charge as a director, although this seems to be of little appeal to X-Men fans on one side.
- The script has been penned by Michael Lesslie who is also the writer of Macbeth (2015) and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023).
- Kevin Feige hinted at a 10-year plan of the Mutant Saga, and this implied that mutants would finally explode into the MCU after Secret Wars.
In an interview, Schreier commented:
If I were to be confirmed on that movie I bet I would not be able to answer that question… Beginning with character and working with great writers is something that always happens.
Can the X-Men Save the MCU?
As the most recent MCU projects have failed to reach the former greatness of the franchise, people are hoping that the X-Men are going to save the day. Kevin Feige appears confident saying:
At last the X-Men are back… A new code of mutants begins with Secret Wars.”
The reboot X-Men has a potential to bring an exciting new era of the X-Men as long as it is done in the right way. Otherwise, it may turn into yet another lost opportunity in the Marvel Phase 5 failures.
Final Thoughts: Is Elle Fanning the Jean Grey We Need?
It is not an easy task to find a person to play the role of Jean Grey, as she is the emotional and psychic backbone of the X-Men. It is possible that the position of Fanning, who depicts the mixture of weakness and despair, coupled with her attitude of becoming a rising star may make her an evident option.
