Kishore is leading the movie “Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes”. Writer Mohan has directed this film after directing some very successful works like Committee Kurrolu and Aye. With Vennela Kishore, it seemed a very promising film which was set to deliver humor as well as mystery. Alas, it falls short of promise on both fronts.
The Storyline
The movie starts on May 21, 1991, the day former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a human bomb attack. The nation is in mourning when a murder takes place on Bheemili Beach in Andhra Pradesh. The victim is Mary, a young woman, whose brutal killing sparks immediate police attention.
Squid Game Season 2: The Real-Life Struggles That Inspired Netflix’s Hit Series
Assigned the case, CI Bhaskar vows to solve it in a week’s time or quit. Political turfs take their share following Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination and Bhaskar passes it on to Sherlock Holmes, this one, Vennela Kishore-a quirky private detective.
As Sherlock investigates, he narrows down the suspects to Mary’s boyfriend Balu (Ravi Teja Mahadasyam), her friend Bhrahma (Ananya Nagalla), a suspended police officer Patnaik (Baahubali Prabhakar), and a group of fishermen. Who killed Mary and why? Sherlock’s investigation unravels those mysteries, with a final revelation involving organ trafficking and a tragic love story.
What Works
Initial Setup: The backdrop of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination sets a gripping stage for the narrative. The juxtaposition of a political tragedy and a local murder adds a layer of intrigue.
Cinematography: N. Mallikarjun’s visuals are a saving grace, especially the beach sequences, which are well-framed and visually engaging.
Ananya Nagalla’s Role: While her character lacks depth, Ananya manages to evoke some emotional resonance in the film’s climactic moments.
What Falls Short
- Weak Plot Execution
The movie storyline begins with a lot of promise but loses its grip fast. In fact, the detective work seems to lack complexity and innovation; even the twists and turns are predictable, with suspense dissipating too early to allow for much intrigue. - Vennela Kishore’s Underwhelming Role
Kishore, known for his comedy timing, is unable to excel in a role that has been written poorly. The quirky detective he is supposed to be turns out to be an uninteresting investigator who asks routine questions. - Unnecessary Subplots
The love story between Balu and Bhrahma feels forced and distracts from the main narrative. Scenes like a romantic beach cake-cutting sequence feel out of place in a crime thriller. - Lack of Humor or Thrills
Writer Mohan tries to balance comedy and suspense but does neither effectively. The jokes are not funny, and the mystery lacks the edge to be gripping. - Music and Background Score
The music by Sunil Kashyap does not add much value to the movie. Neither the songs nor the background score are memorable, which reduces the impact of the movie.
Analysis
The problem with Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes is that it fails to take full advantage of its concept. It has an interesting idea: the murder solved by a local detective in the backdrop of a historical event. But then comes the execution of the film, which was quite poor. The dialogues were very unimpressive, the pace was bad, and the resolution of the movie was quite rushed.
The movie has the potential to be a gripping crime comedy, but it misses the mark by a mile. The characters are flat, and the climax is not at all a satisfactory ending; instead, it raises more questions than answers.
Final Verdict
Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes could have been a refreshing addition to the Telugu cinema’s crime-comedy genre. Instead, it turns into a lackluster experience, neither thrilling nor entertaining.
This is a wasted opportunity for audiences seeking an engaging detective story. Fans of Vennela Kishore should watch some of his earlier movies, where he has delivered better laughs and engagement.
