Story/Plot
Thamma begins during the time of Alexander the Great wherein some unknown vampire Yakshasan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) consumes the blood of the invader. Going to current times, Alok Goyal (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a journalist who decides to go into a thick forest on a mission, only to find himself in the life-threatening situation with a bear. He is rescued by Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna) a vampire who has a golden heart.
Alok instantly falls in love with Tadaka, who is not even aware that her clan follows a stiff set of rules and has a terrible past. When Tadaka breaks her rules in order to save Alok, their relationship evolves into a romantic fantasy with some elements of supernatural mystery. Cameo appearances of other movies included in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) have been made in the story, providing a twist and reminiscence to the audience.
Performances
Ayushmann Khurrana: Once again delivers a solid performance, especially in romantic and lighter scenes. His transformation in the second half showcases his versatility.
Rashmika Mandanna: Stuns as Tadaka, effortlessly portraying a vampire with emotional depth. This is arguably her best role in Bollywood till date.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui: Plays a compelling villain but sometimes overacts, a common trait in commercial roles.
Paresh Rawal: Perfectly balances comedy and seriousness as Alok’s father, adding emotional weight to the narrative.
Other supporting cast members, including Faisal Malik and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, add authenticity and charm to the film.
Direction & Screenplay
Aditya Sarpotdar skillfully incorporates horror and humor, which are typical of MHCU movies. The script is novel, contains funny lines, situational humor, which at times is effective. The rhythm however stumbles in the second half and certain scenes are so unnecessary stretched especially the climax.
The implementation of franchise characters (such as Abhishek Banerjee and Varun Dhawan) is half-baked at some point. In spite of these disadvantages, the story is still interesting particularly to those who love horror-comedy.
Music & Background Score
Sachin–Jigar composers live up to the expectations of a soundtrack that suits the film but cannot be viewed as original in some instances. Other such songs as Tum Mere Na Hue Na Sahi and Rahein Na Rahein Hum are not outstanding hits, but melodious. Background score is effective in adding suspense and drama especially in major horrors.
Cinematography & VFX
The cinematography of Saurabh Goswami is a reflection of the forest and the supernatural environment. VFX is spectacular more so in the introduction of Ayushmann character and in the fight scenes in the second half. Certainly, some of the shots are somewhat unnatural, yet the overall visual presentation is among the strengths of the film.
