The Old Guard 2 cast; The time has come at last. The prequel to the 2020 immortal action-thriller by Netflix, The Old Guard 2, premieres on July 2. The fact that Charlize Theron is back to play the fierce Andromache of Scythia promises more action, more emotion and more philosophical exploration.
Just before the premiere, io9 talked to the actors of the film i.e. KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari and Henry Golding. The actors provided a new angle of how they developed their characters, tackled physically challenging roles and laid out their understanding of the emotional strength of immortality.
Nile’s Physical Growth and Emotional Depth – KiKi Layne Speaks
KiKi Layne herself is back as Nile, who has gradually grown from the confused new recruit she was in the first film to self-assured immortal warrior.
According to Layne, this consisted of the stunts she was allowed to do, the choreography, the weapon she carried, and was pretty fun. It took my bodily limits to a whole new dimension.
This is a bodily transformation reflective of the emotional process of Nile. You will notice a better grounded, fighting ready version of her character who now has a place in the immortal team.
Joe & Nicky’s Eternal Bond – Marwan Kenzari on Real-Life Chemistry
The typical emotional connection to the film is brought out by Marwan Kenzari (as Joe) who is taken up in a life-long romance with Nicky (as Luca Marinelli).
“We’re talking constantly. Off-set too,” Kenzari shared. “I genuinely love this man.”
That real-life friendship brings sincerity to their on-screen relationship, reinforcing their status as one of cinema’s most heartfelt action duos.
From Analyst to Warrior – Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Copley Gets His Hands Dirty
After mostly observing from the sidelines in the first film, Copley—played by Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor—joins the frontlines in the sequel.
“I was excited reading the script,” he said. “Copley gets into this now? Great.”
Copley’s evolution from moral observer to battle-hardened ally reflects the blurred lines between mortal and immortal responsibilities in this world.
Henry Golding Joins the Fray – Finding His Rhythm in the Guard
Known for his stylish roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Snake Eyes, Henry Golding enters the franchise as Tuah, a new character navigating the brutal world of immortals.
“The action is the consequence of the world around them,” Golding said. “It was absolutely fun to get stuck in.”
While Golding may have had limited action scenes, he stressed the balance between combat and the film’s emotional storytelling.
Delays, Reshoots, and Resilience – Staying in Character Despite Challenges
The Old Guard 2 experienced a longer production timeline due to delays and reshoots. But the cast remained connected to their roles.
“Films take the time they take,” said Ejiofor. “We’re always able to jump back into stuff.”
This commitment is evident in the seamless continuation of the story, despite the years between releases.
Next-Level Combat – Choreography That Cuts Deeper
Action fans can expect the sequel’s fight sequences to be more intense and personal. Kenzari revealed that the cast trained with the same commitment as the first film.
“It’s muscle memory,” he explained. “You go through it, you increase speed, and try to master it.”
The choreography is upgraded, aiming to blend brutality with beauty—something the first film was praised for.
Immortality vs. Mortality – What Would You Choose?
As the cast reflected, the core of The Old Guard is more than action. It’s a philosophical exploration of what it means to live forever.
“So much in the movie is about that fragile, sensitive aspect of people healing and not healing,” Kenzari added.
Ejiofor agreed, noting that the story brings deep emotional resonance through its character histories.
Dream Battles – Atomic Blonde vs. Predator Arnie?
When asked who they’d love to see battle it out in a fantasy immortal vs. immortal showdown, the cast got playful.
- Ejiofor: “Atomic Blonde vs. Predator Arnie. Hand to hand. No guns.”
- Kenzari: “Predator Arnie is good.”
- Golding: “How do you beat that?”
- Everyone: (laughs)
Even Home Alone got an unexpected nod!
Final Thoughts – Why The Old Guard 2 Was Worth the Wait
As fans return to this universe, the cast hopes the emotional weight and philosophical depth leave a lasting impression.
“They’re great characters,” Ejiofor said. “There are things to think about—deep emotional resonances.”
“The question is: Would you choose mortality or immortality?” Kenzari added.
